Nehru Snake Boat Race

August 2010 was absolutely crazy for me. Hubby left for work and I was all excited to go to Kerala for the first time for the famous Snake Boat Race. It was going to be a single female traveler trip for me.The first ever. I wanted to make it a simple , less luxury and inexpensive trip. But things didn’t workout that way. I wanted to travel by train along the Konkan line but thanks to the rains, the trains were cancelled and so on. So I had to rebook the entire August was absolutely crazy for me. Finally the travel date had approached and I was all set to rock and roll. Took the bus from Rajkot to Ahmedabad, hopped on to the flight from Ahm to Cochin. At the Cochin airport The Ramada hotel car was waiting for me. The Ramada resort had a superb monsoon off season offer which was hard to resist for a 2 night stay. The Ramada property was fabulous and it gave me lots of ideas for my new home 🙂 in terms of interiors. Their Spa was fabulous and is a must try.

Next i was set to go to Allepey with a bunch of aspiring photographers to cover the race. The booking for the stay had already been done by another bunch of people and though it would be decent bu to my horror is was horrifying and pathetic.Small dorms with 4 bunk beds and one bathroom to share with only one 40 watt bulb in the room and 0 watt bulb in the bathroom. Doors and windows dont close properly, so if there is rain, the rain water entered into the room and on our head. But the place was quiet scenic and peaceful and with lots of snakes and other creatures. Food was ok nothing great. Didnt like mallu food with coconut oil in almost everything.

The climate was nice and pleasant with rains almost everyday. One the first day we went to see the men and women practicing on their boats for the race and i must tell u that rowing those boats is just no easy. There is so much energy required and they put in lots of efforts and dedication into winning the trophy. On the final day of the race we were out on our boat from 8 in the morning and guess what it was hot that day :(. There were thousands of people around us, hundreds of boats, house boats, tourist boats and so on. And all i could see everywhere along with people, water and boats was toddy, kingfisher beer, fish fry , chicken fry and drunk men with red eyes. It was scary. All the drunk men knew was to stare at women and yell loudly. But the race was super exciting and fabulous. The boats were looking at their best and the men were rowing at their best. It was a great experience in all. And Oh ! did i tell you that i was going to be a witness for a murder …. heheheh long story wont bother u with it.

Back to Cochin all tired and waiting for next day to being so that i can head back home. Was put up at the Quality Airport Hotel. The property was good but the staff was horrible. 0 points to them. But one thing i know for sure is that though people call Kerala as Gods Own Country, I would never like to visit this place again even if someone took me to that place for free. I didnt like the food and didnt like the way people behaved. A totally crazy trip.
